NUX Basketball
Winky Kim and Grace Lee
Mr. Ward’s Interview
The high school NUX Basketball was held on the 15th and 16th of November in Guangzhou at Utaloy. Mr. Ward handled both the high school girls’ and boys’ basketball teams. The girls played 12 games and the boys played 24 games. “Basketball is all about experience, practice and friendship,” said Mr. Ward when reflecting on this tournament.
The high school NUX Basketball teams were successful as they won some games. On the other hand, they also lost some games. The coach expressed that the team did well but they still have some movements to improve. The purpose of the games was mostly to gain experience and also learn to cooperate with their teammates better. “Basketball is a complicated sport so the more you play it, the more you’ll be better,” stated Mr. Ward. The team’s expectations are to try their best and learn to cooperate.
The opponents were Nanjing International School and Utaloy International School. “The high school NUX basketball teams need to work out and also practice more to improve on some movements,” suggested by Mr. Ward.
Mr. Ward’s final comments on this experience were that “Winning isn't everything... being strong enough to pull games out of the reach of other teams is important too. Being willing to help others and think of the TEAM first is important too. Being confident to know you can do it is important too. Being willing to take risks to ‘put it all out there’ is important too.”

NUX middle school tournament
By Powei Chiu
Early in the season, the XIS middle school girls' and boys' soccer team participated in the annual NUX middle school tournament held in Nanjing. The XIS dolphins played against Nanjing International School and Utaloy International School from Guangzhou on Friday afternoon. In the first game, both girls' and boys' team lost to Utaloy. In the past, our soccer teams are considered as one of the best teams throughout NUX. Therefore, the surprising loss was a very good learning experience for our exceptionally strong soccer team. Although our young soccer players were shocked, they soon bounced back and won the next game.
On Saturday, the XIS young soccer teams had an intense schedule. Each team had barely enough time to rest between games. Although, the schedule is intense and exhausting, our young dolphins never gave up on any plays, any loose balls, or any opportunities to score. We played tough defense and had successful teamwork, which led the boys to win all of the games without much challenge. On the other hand, the girls also won two out of the three games on Saturday, but lost to Utaloy again in a very close match.
NUX tournament does not have a champion or a trophy, but our young players are becoming stronger, tougher, and better! It is clear that the soccer teams are ready for the SCISAC challenge! LET'S BRING BACK ANOTHER SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP! GO DOLPHIN!

High School ACAMIS Volleyball Tournament
By Powei Chiu
The annual High School ACAMIS volleyball tournament was held on October 17-19, 2013, at TEDA international school of Northern China. It was a harder and tougher tournament compared to NUX. There are stronger and taller players in that tournament, but we never gave up on any plays. The young men and women smashed harder and served stronger as the game became more intense. Surprisingly, the lady dolphins, led by all-star captain, Victoria Wang, finished in 3rd place, the best record since 2007. Even though our volleyball boys’ team finished with 5th place, we still won the All-tournament sportsmanship trophy- a huge award decided by all the coaches in the tournament. Jason Byun, the all-tournament selection and the XIS volleyball team captain, led the team with excellent plays and smart decisions. Kevin Li and Vincent Wang had huge hitting successes. Other players had good experiences and continually to improve throughout the tournament! GOOD JOB dolphins!

NUX Volleyball 2013

The annual NUX Volleyball Tournament was held on September 13-14 2013. The XIS Boys’ and Girls’ Volleyball team were joined by Nanjing International School and Guangzhou Utaloy International School for some intense and exciting volleyball matches early in the season. Not surprisingly, the XIS Boys and Girls continued to dominate the court. The Boys’ team, led by top players Jason Byun and Ken Hung, was easily the best team in the entire tournament. As for the Girls, they never gave up on any chances to score. On Saturday, each team played an exhausting four more matches with only an hour to rest. Although the other teams improved throughout the tournament, our boys and girls team still managed to win most of the games. As the Head Coach of the Boys Volleyball team, Mr. Ward, pointed out that the Boys’ and Girls’ teams are gradually improving throughout the tournament. Both teams are a step closer to the ACAMIS tournament in Tianjin. Let’s go Dolphins, bring back another championship!
