Security Council
![]() The delegate of USA apparently has better things to do...
Togo must have everything repeated to him. UK's phone rang. China loves her drones. What happens in the Security Council stays in the security council. The 15 delegates representing their respective countries started out the conference by introducing their country’s perspectives and the issue. The dilemma to resolve was the border disputes between China and India, and much discussion of the topic occurred. The delegates of India, Russia, and Pakistan were very involved, clearly stating their country’s point of views and persuading the rest of the conference to accept them. The delegate from the United Kingdom attempted a British accent to better impersonate the role, however failed miserably. As well as this funny occurrence, the delegate from China was emphasizing the use of drones to resolve the matter, verging out of topic. The delegate from China encouraged drone development for defensive and protective purposes for example sustaining the stability of the country. In lobbying and merging, there are two distinct groups of delegates fighting for opposite opinions. The delegate from Pakistan and China accentuates the encouragement of a plebiscite in the Kashmir regions to resolve the dispute there. However the delegate from India, along with the UK and USA, believe that the land should be retained by the current owners, and then a possible plebiscite might be done. The delegate from the USA holds the safety of American citizens as the highest priorities and will drone strike anyone who threatens it. A brief interview with junior chair of the Security Council (Andrew Johnson): “I wish to see the delegates from Afghanistan, France, the UK, and Rwanda be more vocally involved in debate. The delegate from the Russian Federation is completely towards economic development, and agrees with the plebiscite, however wants to put an end to illicit drug trade activities on the border. It is this delegate’s 2nd year of doing MUN, she is very enthusiastic and involved in the topic. Overall, the council is doing quite well holistically; hopefully both resolutions (one per topic) will be peacefully passed!

ECOSOC
![]() Delegates constantly leave placards on the epic podium.
“Good afternoon, honorable delegates and chairs and I would like to make a few points.” said the delegate from the United State of America. Her voice resonated throughout the room, and the other delegates were surprised at his confidence in being brave enough to say her point for couple times. Victoria and Rebecca, the experienced chairs, gave precise instructions for the simulation, and Rebecca leading the first session of the debate. The predictions for this conference had been pessimistic, with the delegates expected to be quiet and too shy to raise their placards to get involved in the debate. However, the predictions turned out to be the opposite: all the delegates were very brave, willing to raise their placards high and participate in the debate. In ECOSOC Committee, delegates represented a total of twenty five different nations. For this XIAMUN simulation, the assigned topics for ECOSOC Committee were “Drug Trafficking in conflict areas” and “Implementing Education Program promoting Sustainable Development.” The delegates for the Russian Federation, China, the United States and Singapore gave strong speeches asking for more information and urging others to engage in the debate. The delegate for the United State of America confidently stated his county’s position against the idea of Drug Trafficking in conflict areas. This superior speech resulted in strong opposition from the delegates from China and the United States. The result? The United States and Russian Federation both brought delegates whom the others should watch carefully. At the end of speeches and questions, the lobbying and merging started. All the delegates got together and shared ideas to come up with a resolution. Over the course of the two days, all the students from their separate schools have done a great job. Even though most of the students’ first language is not English, they tried their best and spoke with pride. We are looking forward to see how all the delegates will improve by this time next year.

WHO
![]() New Zealand leaves room to go to the nurse.
Raising placards high up in the air, the delegates were chosen to speak by the chair, Sung Ei Choi. Although the atmosphere in the room was really awkward and silent, there were a lot of delegates who wished to speak. The first delegate, the delegate of Switzerland started his speech and the debate began.
In the first debate, the delegates were to talk about food safety. All the delegates were providing information clearly, had no trouble of understanding. However, there was still the awkwardness stuck in the room. Delegates talked about a lot of problems and solution. 2nd debate began right after the break. The 2nd debate was about global epidemic. After all delegates got seated, the chair asked them to raise the placards up to those who wish to speak. However, this time, not many delegates wished to speak, which made it really hard to break the ice in the room. Few delegates started to speak up but having no question to the speakers. Out of all the shy and quiet delegates, the delegate of USA, Jin Kim was one of the delegates who tried to make the debate entertaining by asking questions to the speakers, and he was very interactive during the lobby merging. He also tried to cause war to happen when the delegate of Denmark tried to avoid USA’s significant question. However, USA’s plan of war was failed. Although there was awkwardness and silence in the room, the simulation was well done. All the delegates worked really hard and were able to write really good resolution. We hope to see you again next year. Authored by James Kim |

About XIAMUN:
Welcome to XIAMUN. This is the fourth annual Model United nations simulation organized by Xiamen International School. The conference is designed to provide students a chance to meet delegates from other schools and have debates on various significant problems throughout the world such as “Preventing Desertification”, “Justifying International Intervention in Civil Wars”, “The Question of the Syrian Refugee Crisis”, and “Implementing Education Programs Promoting Sustainable Development”. There will be nine committees during this simulation including Security Council, MSHRC, MSDC, MSGA, ECOSOC, WHO, HRC, UNDC, and UNEP. Secretary General Ip expects many delegates to actively participate and confidently speak in front of others. We look forward to productive and positive debates among the delegates. For inexperienced delegates, we hope this simulation will be an enjoyable chance for them to develop their skills and have an amazing simulation. We all hope you enjoy the two days of MUN simulation in Xiamen International School.

Behind the scene of Planning MUN
“Hurry Everyone!!! Let’s get things done by Wednesday so we can relax on Thursday!” exclaimed director Ben Wagor, on Monday. “Why won’t people send me what to print?”, “How many do we need?”, and “I’m hungry!” were all common phrases for the Chairs preparing for the upcoming XIAMUN. Besides writing the background papers for each committee, the XIAMUN chairs also made badges, made delegate packages, made note passing papers, moved the tables and chairs to each committees, as well as organized the endless amounts of placards. Not only that, food, bus schedule, and admin staffs were organized and planned by the senior and junior chairs of the simulation. While the guest schools were being escorted to their hotels, XIS staff members of the simulation spent all day setting up everything to perfection. For this year the press team and video crew are updating images and articles online. They devoted their time to create a video of the simulation to highlight this important, memorable, and worthwhile experience.
Chairs, admin staff, video crew members and press with worked diligently to ensure a great two days of debate and should be congratulated accordingly. After the two days, hopefully all delegates will have learned something new that they will cherish.

Situation in Syria
Syria Civil War began in 2011 March. Fifteen school children were arrested and tortured for painting anti-government graffiti on a wall. After then the locals were outraged against the government’s actions. Unexpectedly, the government responded with violence, killing four protesters. The protesters only wanted the school children to be released and the country to be more liberal. Other countries such as America, Britain, and France were committed to this cause after the reports of chemical weapons usage. The use of chemical weapons was destructive and soon became an international outrage. The U.S government had suggested a solution of destroying all the chemical weapons in Syria and the process began in October. However, the war didn’t end and it doesn’t seem like it will end at any time soon. The solution to end the war has not yet been suggested, however, discussions still continue among prominent nations like U.S, Britain, and France. My personal response toward this war is that after five years the war won’t end unless other nations send Peacekeepers and solve it through force. Not only is there protest against the war, but religious issues are also heavily involved. I believe without any support or opposition from other nations, the war will never stop within the two groups in Syria. Britain and France have suggested the sending of weapons and armies to Syria and attempt to end the war, however, the other nations weren’t sure which side the weapon should be provided and if the problem should be solved through violence. Syrian government troops are unlikely to regain full control over the country so the UN is in for some tough decisions.

Forever Alone
Malala Yousafzai, a sixteen year old teenager was targeted because of her straightforward perspectives on women’s rights and education had survived an assassination in Pakistan on October 9th, 2012. She was shot in the head and neck by Taliban gunmen while she was returning home on a school bus. Her skull was fractured, and nearly died, but she was sent to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, England, for intensive recovery.
The assassination attempt from the Taliban sparked a national and international outpour to support Malala Yousafzai. “Before this attack, I might have been a little bit afraid how death would be. Now I’m not, because I have experienced it.” Malala says. She also said that being shot has taken away her fear. “ I have already seen death and I know that death is supporting me in my cause of education. Death does not want to kill me,” she says. “Before this attack, I might have been a little bit afraid how death would be. Now I’m not, because I have experienced it.”
A year after being shot, Malala understood her goal. “I speak for education of every child, in every corner of the world,” she said. “There has been a discrimination in our society,” she believes this must be defeated. “We women are going to bring change. We are speaking up for girls’ rights, but we must not behave like men, like they have done in the past.”
After these inspiring speeches, women all over the world emerged a new ideology: equality needs to be delivered to the society. Above all, the inspiring speeches she presented may cause her to be FOREVER ALONE! (in reference to “we must not behave like men”)
